We Tested the Best Exercise Mats for Every Workout—These 9 Came Out on Top

Whether you're starting your day with an at-home yoga flow or squeezing in strength training between work-from-home meetings, a quality exercise mat is essential. Depending on your goals and preferences, it might even be all you need for an effective workout. Plus, it’s easy to take on the go. If you belong to a Pilates studio or frequently travel to new destinations but don’t want to interrupt your routine, an exercise mat offers comfort, support, and protection. The best mats are lightweight, supportive, comfortable, anti-slip, and easy to clean.

To find the best exercise mats, we first asked experts, a Pilates instructor, and a physical therapist, for their advice on which key features to look for. Then, we tested 19 exercise mats from brands like lululemon, Nike, and Gaiam. While practicing yoga, doing barre classes, tackling our weight training goals, and more, we evaluated each mat for design, comfort, grip, portability, and value.

Pros
  • Graduated texture for grip

  • Sweat-wicking

  • Large enough for taller exercisers

Cons
  • Pricier than other options

  • Heavier than other options

Key Specs

Material: Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) Dimensions: 71 x 26 inches Thickness: 6 millimeters Weight: 4.4 pounds Waterproof: Yes Our Overall Rating: 4.8/5

Who It’s For

Best for at-home exercisers who need a little more cushion for higher-intensity workouts.

Why We Love It

lululemon’s The Workout Mat is a 6-millimeter-thick mat that's versatile enough for almost any kind of training, making it an easy choice for our top overall pick. We found the textured surface enhances grip, with a graduated design preventing us from slipping while we held planks, downward dogs, and more. We like how the raised bubbles vary in size and shape, also adding to the mat’s overall stylish aesthetic. Plus, the material is durable enough to hold up to our gym shoes, heavy weights, and lots and lots of workouts.

During testing, we also loved that this mat felt larger than most. One tester, who is 5 feet, 11 inches tall, fit comfortably on this mat during all workouts. And during testing, we noticed that the mat has a well-balanced thickness: soft enough to support our joints, but firm enough to keep us stable. Plus, the mat is sweat-wicking and stain-resistant, making it a solid choice for heated classes, too. Overall, this is a versatile pick for every workout, from stretching to strength training, and it is one of the best mats we've tested to date.

Potential Flaws

  • This mat is pricier than many other options on our list, but we think it's worth the extra cost for it's durability and versatility.
  • This mat is one of the heaviest on our list, so it's less portable. However, you can purchase a mat or stretching strap to make it easier to transport.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester is a barre teacher who routinely brings her exercise mat with her to the studio. She does barre, Pilates, and strength training workouts at home three to four times per week. She likes to work out barefoot and, before testing this mat, often used a blanket for additional cushioning during floorwork.

  • Ridges for traction

Cons
  • May hold onto odor

Key Specs

Material: Synthetic Dimensions: 72 x 24 inches Thickness: 12.5 millimeters Weight: 2.4 pounds Waterproof: Not specified Our Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Who It’s For

Best if you want a soft, thick, budget-friendly mat for most workouts.

Why We Love It

We recommend Amazon Basic's Extra Thick Exercise Mat because it offers all the features of a quality mat at a budget-friendly price point. It comes with an elastic carrying strap, making it easily portable to and from the gym or your favorite fitness class. At 12.5 millimeters, it’s one of the thicker options on our list, providing extra support and shock absorption without ever compromising balance.

During testing, we noticed that the thick foam mat is textured with deep ridges to provide anti-slip traction and better stability. We confidently used this mat for handstands, planks, and more—even with sweaty hands. The cushioning felt soft, which we particularly loved while stretching.

Potential Flaws

  • We noticed that this mat started to hold onto odor, so we don't recommend it for super sweaty workouts.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester, who enjoys CrossFit and hot yoga, used to do all of his mobility exercises on a carpeted floor. Now, he uses this mat three to four times a week for supplemental training, in addition to his weekly workout routine. He prefers larger exercise mats with plenty of padding.

  • May have a slight odor

Who It’s For

Best if you love practicing Pilates, whether at home or at a heated studio.

Why We Love It

Aeromat’s Elite Yoga/Pilates Mat is the perfect 6-millimeter thickness, providing soft cushioning during floor workouts without throwing you off-balance during moves like V-sits for belly-up core work. During our Pilates practice, it helped support our joints and keep us comfortable in all moves. It's actually one of the most comfortable mats we've ever tried.

Made from foam with a waffle-like texture, this mat has a slightly sticky grip that prevented us from sliding around, even when our hands got really sweaty. And we like that it's latex-free to prevent irritation or allergic reactions. Plus, thanks to the travel-friendly shoulder strap, this lightweight mat is easy to tote around. It quickly became our go-to accessory for trips to the studio (and coffee dates after).

Potential Flaws

  • We suggest airing this mat out for a bit before using it because we noticed a slight odor after unboxing.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester likes to practice yoga at home at least three times a week. She prefers a thicker mat to help support her during poses.

  • Texture offers reliable grip

Cons
  • Not as portable as other options

Key Specs

Material: Foam Dimensions: 72 x 24 inches Thickness: 6 millimeters Weight: 1 pound Waterproof: Not specified Our Overall Rating: 4.8/5

Who It’s For

Best for yogis who prefer firm support and don’t want to spend a fortune for a high-quality, grippy mat.

Why We Love It

Investing in a mat specifically made for yoga will elevate your practice and help you focus. YogaAccessories' Extra Thick Deluxe Yoga Mat is budget-friendly, supportive, and latex-free. A thick, squishy mat is not ideal for yoga because it can make it hard to balance and ground your feet. This mat is 6 millimeters, providing just the right amount of thickness for comfort without being too plush.

We love how soft yet stable the foam feels underneath our hands and bare feet. And it’s supportive for our joints, too—we noticed less pain when kneeling on this mat than others. Beyond yoga, we found that this mat is suitable for all types of workouts. We used it for power yoga, strength exercises, and even boot camp classes. Plus, the grip is impressive; our sweaty hands stayed firmly in place during planks and other moves. We also like how easy it is to clean.

Potential Flaws

  • This mat feels a bit heavier than other mats we've used, so you may want a carrying strap for taking it to and from the studio.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester used this mat for yoga and strength training workouts. In the past, she’s been a fan of Gaiam mats for their plush, supportive cushioning. She exercised on this mat at home and in her apartment building’s gym.

Pros
  • Sticky-feeling grip

  • Unique, reversible design

  • Arrives in minimal packaging

Cons
  • May have a slight odor

Key Specs

Material: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Dimensions: 68 x 24 inches Thickness: 6 millimeters Weight: 2.5 pounds Waterproof: Not specified Our Overall Rating: 4.7/5

Who It’s For

Best for high-sweat classes or if you practice in very warm environments.

Why We Love It

A yoga mat should have the right amount of grip—and that goes double when you’re sweating during a hot yoga class. Thanks to its textured surface, Gaiam’s Premium Reversible Lunar Wave Yoga Mat is our top pick for hot yoga. Whether our hands were dry or super sweaty, we noticed this mat stayed put, even during poses like downward dog. The mat was so grippy that it almost felt sticky, which helped us feel completely stable and secure.

We love that this reversible mat features a unique pattern on both sides in calming shades of blue that will stand out in any studio. We also appreciate that it's thin enough to roll up and carry around. Just a few weeks into the testing period, we found ourselves using the mat more and more due to its supportive padding, stay-put texture, and luxe style. Another bonus: If you’re trying to cut down on waste, we also appreciate that this mat comes in minimal packaging.

Potential Flaws

  • During our test, we noticed a slight odor at first, but it wasn't enough to deter us from our practice. And the brand recommends letting the mat air out for two to three days after opening.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester used this mat in the morning for foam rolling and stretching sessions while recovering from an injury. She also brought it with her while traveling during the testing period. Her typical workout routine includes yoga, Pilates, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and powerlifting. She’s looking to replace her current mat because it’s too thin, although it’s lasted a few years.

Bala Play Mat

Pros
  • Unique rounded silhouette

  • Moisture-wicking

  • Antimicrobial coating

Cons
  • May be too thin for some

  • Not as spacious as other options

Key Specs

Material: Rubber, polyurethane Dimensions: 71 x 26.5 inches Thickness: 5 millimeters Weight: Not specified Waterproof: Yes Our Overall Rating: 4.6/5

Who It’s For

Best for carrying back and forth to classes, and any workout done mostly on your feet, rather than hands and knees.

Why We Love It

Bala’s The Play Mat is our top pick if you always sweat it out in the studio. We immediately noticed the rounded edge that set it apart from our other picks, giving it a stylish look. The polyurethane-coated rubber is super smooth but still feels pleasantly grippy, making it one of our favorites for all types of heated workouts. We never felt like it slid around, even when doing faster-paced exercises.

The mat is water-proof and moisture-wicking, and also comes complete with an antimicrobial finish. It can handle everything from barre to hot yoga, and more. (There’s also a matching towel, for extra sweaty sessions). We like that it's lightweight, can be rolled tightly for carrying, and has absolutely no smell, even when first opened.

Potential Flaws

  • This is one of the thinnest mats on our list so we don't recommend it if you plan to be on your wrists or knees a lot during your workout.
  • The rounded edge makes this mat not as spacious as others on our list, but it's still wide enough for most exercise.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester uses an exercise mat for her at-home Pilates sessions three to five times a week. Since her back muscles tend to feel tight, she prefers a thicker mat with plenty of padding. Before this mat, she used a lululemon mat—while she appreciated the thickness, she didn’t like how squeaky it was.

Pros
  • Thicker than other options

  • Extra long and wide

  • Made of natural rubber

Cons
  • Not as portable as other options

Key Specs

Material: Rubber Dimensions: 80 x 28 inches Thickness: 8 millimeters Weight: 1.5-4.5 pounds Waterproof: Not specified Our Overall Rating: 4.9/5

Who It’s For

Best for anyone who needs extra space and a little more cushioning during home workouts.

Why We Love It

Jade Yoga's XW Fusion Yoga Mat is pricier than other mats on our list, but its high-quality, natural rubber construction and luxurious feel make it well worth the price tag. We also love the 8-millimeter thickness, which delivers plenty of cushioning. And during testing, we were surprised by how supportive it felt in all kinds of yoga poses. One of our testers, new to yoga, even said that this mat is the key to maintaining a daily practice.

We found the deep color and grippy texture of the mat very pleasant. One tester even left it sitting out in their home gym because it looked so nice. This mat's larger size is ideal for taller yogis and anyone needing some extra space for their wide Scorpion Pose or Pigeon Pose. This is the longest, thickest mat Jade Yoga has to offer, and we think it's well worth the investment for most yogis.

Potential Flaws

  • We love how supportive this mat feels, but its thickness and size make it a challenge to roll and transport.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester likes to try different styles of yoga at home five to seven times per week. When she shops for exercise mats, she considers how expensive they are and which materials they’re made of. In the past, she’s used thinner mats that are too slick for holding certain yoga poses.

Pros
  • Supportive and anti-slip grip

  • Very lightweight

  • Folds up for portability

Cons
  • May have a slight odor

  • May be too thin for some

Key Specs

Material: Natural rubber Dimensions: 24 x 68 inches Thickness: 1.6 millimeters Weight: 1.5 pounds Waterproof: Not specified Our Overall Rating: 4.2/5

Who It’s For

Best for anyone who prefers a thin, grippy mat that is also super portable.

Why We Love It

If you like to maintain your exercise routine even while traveling, or you just need a mat you can stash in your gym bag, we recommend JadeYoga’s Voyager Mat. We love the ultra-thin design, which lets you fold it up into a small square, about the size of a yoga block, making it easy to store in a drawer or toss in a bag. We liked bringing it to and from the yoga studio and on our weekend trips during testing. You can also roll it like a traditional exercise mat—and it will actually stay rolled, according to our test.

During testing, we found that this mat has a serious grip on both sides. Whether we were working up a sweat or trying to hold a balance pose, the Voyager Mat’s texture kept us feeling secure. And just 1.5 pounds, this mat is super lightweight, making it even easier to pack in your gym backpack or carry-on luggage. We also love that it's made with recyclable materials, and the company plants a tree for every mat purchased.

Potential Flaws

  • When we first got this mat, we noticed a strong smell. However, after we laid it out for about two weeks, the smell faded.
  • We love how lightweight and portable this mat is but, its thin design doesn't offer much cushioning for sensitive joints.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester enjoys doing yoga, HIIT, core work, and lifting weights. She does a mix of workouts at home and at the gym, and she uses this mat about three times a week. She tends to sweat while she exercises, so she looks for an exercise mat with plenty of grip.

Pros
  • Easy to clean

  • Easy to roll up, and stays rolled

  • Adjustable carry strap included

Cons
  • May feel slippery when wet

Key Specs

Material: Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), polyester Dimensions: 71 x 24 inches Thickness: 8 millimeters Weight: 2.1 pounds Waterproof: Not specified

Who It’s For

Best for beginners who need a versatile mat that works for a variety of workouts.

Why We Love It

Nike’s Training Mat 2.0 has 8 millimeters of thick cushioning from high-density foam. And it's designed to be versatile enough for all kinds of workouts, including Pilates, low-impact HIIT workouts, circuits, stretching, and more. The mat’s textured, grippy surface adds to its versatility, as we felt confident during all activities. And at around 2 pounds, we found that it’s not overly heavy or bulky (but doesn’t skimp on plush padding, either).

During testing, the mat was easy to roll up and store once we finished using it. We also love that you can use the adjustable carrying strap to bring it with you to the gym or away for the weekend. Its plain black color means it doesn't show dirt and is easy to clean—after each workout, just wipe it down with a damp cloth.

Potential Flaws

  • After cleaning, make sure this mat is fully dry before storing. We found that it tends to feel slippery when it’s wet.

Meet Our Tester

Our tester uses exercise mats for bodyweight strength training moves at home. She likes mats with more cushioning to protect her joints during workouts. She prioritizes mats made of high-quality materials that last. She also frequently uses exercise mats for back stretches because of her preexisting back and neck injuries, so she likes mats that support that type of activity.

Exercise Mats We Also Tested

We tested 19 exercise mats in total, but not all of them impressed us enough to make our final list of recommendations. Although we liked some features of these mats, they ultimately didn't meet our expectations:

  • Nike’s Mastery Yoga Mat impressed us with its pretty design and sturdy, supportive feel. Its grip was good, but we didn't like the strong odor it had when we first opened it. We also think it's too pricey to be a good value.
  • The Stakt Mat folds up for space-saving storage, and we like the grip, thanks to the sticky surface. But this mat is very thin and unsupportive. We felt like we were sitting on the floor while doing Pilates.

What to Look for When Shopping for Exercise Mats

  • Type of Workout: Your exercise mat should be tailored to your workout as much as possible. If you're using your mat mostly for yoga, you'll want one that allows you to grip the floor and balance. Thicker mats can be used for a variety of workouts like Pilates, bodyweight workouts, or strength training.
  • Thickness: The right thickness for an exercise mat is up to personal preference—it depends on the type of exercise and what feels comfortable to you. While a thicker mat may feel better on your joints, Pilates instructor Linda Magid says that a thicker mat is also harder to balance on.
  • Material: Exercise mats can be made from a variety of materials like polyester, vinyl, rubber, and foam. Rubber mats are popular for their durability, but they don’t feel as well-cushioned as foam mats. Foam mats are lighter and more affordable, but tend to get damaged more easily. You can also find some mats made from eco-friendly materials if that is important to you.
  • Size: Look for an exercise mat that is long enough and wide enough to lie down on comfortably. Most mats are between 65 and 75 inches long and around 25 inches wide. Some are larger if you need more room.
  • Grip: Most people like the added grip and stability of a textured surface, says physical therapist Tyler Lowe, especially if the exercise involves a lot of movement. Textured mats usually have the best traction. And if you sweat a lot while you exercise, look for a mat that’s also sweat-wicking or moisture-resistant and easy to clean after each workout.

How We Tested the Best Exercise Mats

To find the best exercise mats, we tested 19 options from popular, trusted fitness brands. We first speak with fitness experts to learn which key features to look for in an exercise mat. And then, we review important details like materials, weight, thickness, and intended use of mats at different price points. As we continue to test and evaluate more exercise mats, we keep these important criteria in mind:

  • Design: When we open each mat for the first time, we note its packaging—whether recyclable or excessive—and whether it smells. We evaluate the design, including the surface texture, color or pattern, and shape of the mat. We also note its size and whether it comes with any accessories.
  • Comfort: While using the mat, we pay attention to how comfortable it feels under our hands and feet. Is it supportive and cushiony, or thin and flimsy? Does the thickness of the mat affect our balance? We note any impact the mat has on our joints, such as relieving or worsening joint pain. During the testing period, we make sure to use each mat for different types of exercise, like hot yoga, HIIT, or strength training, to determine what it’s best suited for.
  • Grip: To evaluate each mat's grip, we first note its texture and if it feels slippery or sticky. While we exercise, we consider whether we have a solid grip on the mat or if our hands and feet slide around in motion. We also wet our hands for a sweat-test to determine if the mat has enough grip to keep us secure even when we get sweaty.
  • Portability: For each exercise mat, we evaluate how easy it is to roll up. Does it stay rolled by itself? Does it roll tightly enough to carry easily? How heavy or bulky is it? We also note if a carry strap or bag is included for easier portability.

Our Experts

We consulted the following experts for their input on key features to look for in a quality exercise mat, and any flaws that may be dealbreakers for certain activities. We also got their input on which brands stand out from the rest.

  • Linda Magid, fitness and Pilates instructor at Pilates For Real Bodies
  • Tyler Lowe, physical therapist and founder of Loving Life Physical Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best exercise mats to buy?

The best exercise mats have a balanced thickness that provides enough cushioning while keeping you stable. They should also have good traction and high-quality construction. When shopping, you should also consider how easy the mat will be to clean, transport, and store.

What’s the difference between a yoga mat and an exercise mat?

A yoga mat provides a comfortable, non-slip surface for kneeling and sitting, while an exercise mat is more multi-purpose, Lowe says. Exercise mats can be used for yoga, but also feature more cushioning for other activities, like strength training, or Pilates.

How much does a good exercise mat cost?

Most high-quality exercise mats cost anywhere from $20 to $200. Budget-friendly mats can be just as comfortable as high-end ones, although may not be as durable or as large.
