Expert-Tested: The 7 Best Athleta Leggings for Every Workout and Style

Athleta has long been one of best legging brands for its high-quality, comfortable, on-trend workout gear. But with so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to know which pair of leggings fits your workout and style needs. To take out the guesswork, we spoke with fitness trainers for advice on key features to look for in a pair of leggings. Then, we researched dozens of options, prioritizing ones that are high-quality, comfortable, supportive, and durable. We also paid attention to fit (rise and length) and features (opacity, pockets, and sweat-wicking materials).

Additionally, we have tested seven pairs of Athleta leggings to date. When we test leggings, we wear each pair for low-, medium-, and high-impact exercises, as well as casually in our regular routines. We pay attention to how they feel and last throughout the testing period. Our favorite pairs of leggings earn high scores for quality, opacity, fit, performance, and overall value.

What to Know Before You Shop

Athleta has six main styles of leggings, each designed with different fabrications and for different activities. We personally tested each style, except the Rainier and Headlands Hybrid.

  • Transcend: Made with a lightweight blend of nylon and Lycra, this style delivers a barely-there, second-skin feel that's best worn for low-impact movement, lounging, and daily wear.
  • Ultimate: A blend of recycled polyester and Lycra, these leggings offer sleek support and generous compression that's ideal for medium- to high-impact workouts.
  • Salutation: Made with nylon and Lycra, this fabrication delivers soft comfort and gentle compression for workout classes, lounging, and daily wear.
  • Elation: Also made with nylon and Lycra, this style delivers similar soft comfort and gentle compression for workout classes, lounging, and daily wear.
  • Rainier: Best for medium- and high-impact outdoor workouts in cool to cold climates, these leggings are made with recycled nylon and Lycra that offer compression and insulation.
  • Headlands Hybrid: Made with recycled nylon and spandex, this style delivers protection, durability, and storage options that you need for outdoor hikes, climbing, and travels.

Who They’re For

Best for wearers who love low-impact movement and want a lightweight, buttery-soft legging with pockets.

Why We Love Them

We test hundreds of leggings, but Athleta’s Transcend Stash Tight continues to impress us because of its silky-soft touch, lightweight yet squat-proof material, and all-day comfort. They’re made from a blend of nylon and Lycra that we found offers a truly barely-there feel

We've worn these for yoga, mindfulness meditation, running errands, and more, and are so impressed with how well they stay in place. We noticed that the stretchy leggings move freely with our bodies during all activities, with no adjusting required. Plus, the high-rise waistband offers light compression and solid support without ever falling down.

Despite their lightweight and breathable fabrication, the leggings are completely opaque. In fact, we even found that they completely hide underwear color and lines—a huge plus that’s not always easy to find. Even after multiple wears and washes, the leggings didn’t lose their shape or opacity. It’s also worth mentioning that the leggings have side pockets, making them even easier to recommend as our top pick.

Potential Flaws

  • We did notice some slight fraying at the seams, especially on the legs and at the ankle.
  • Best for low-impact activities, these leggings do not offer enough compression and support for high-impact exercise.

Pros
  • Stays in place

  • Provide supportive comfort

  • Buttery soft

Cons
  • Waist can feel constrictive

Key Specs:

Sizes: XXS to 3XL (00 to 24) Materials: Nylon, Lycra Inseam: 25, 27, 30 inches Pockets: Bonded side pockets Care: Machine wash and dry Our Overall Rating: 4.7/5

Who They’re For

Best for yogis who want a silky-soft legging that stays in place, offers medium compression, and has side pockets.

Why We Love Them

We fell in love with Athleta’s Salutation Stash Tights thanks to its perfect mix of buttery softness and supportive comfort. Made with nylon and Lycra, these leggings offer a similar second-skin feel to the Transcend Stash Tights, though with slightly more compression. During testing, we found that the high-rise waistband stays put even during intense power vinyasa yoga flows.

Stash Tights go on smoothly and the seams are unobtrusive and comfortable. Plus, we happily noticed that they provide a flattering fit throughout, without any crotch sagging or rolling. This pair gives you both comfort and support—exactly what you need when you are striving for focus and calmness.

Potential Flaws

  • The leggings are squat-proof, but we did notice that some thicker, colorful underwear peeks through. We recommend wearing nude or seamless workout underwear.
  • One of our 5-foot 6-inch testers did notice that these leggings bunched around her ankles, so we recommend the ⅞ length for shorter wearers.

Pros
  • Rated UPF 50+

  • Barely-there feel

  • Completely opaque

Cons
  • No large pockets

  • Not enough compression for high-impact exercise

Key Specs:

Sizes: XXS to 3XL (00 to 24) Materials: Nylon, Lycra Inseam: Not listed Pockets: Hidden, internal key/card pocket in waistband Care: Machine wash and dry Our Overall Rating: 4.9/5

Who They’re For

Best for lounging, low-impact workouts, and all-day wear.

Why We Love Them

Athleta’s Transcend Tight is our favorite pair of leggings to go from the couch to the studio, and then out to coffee with a friend. They’re the same exact fabrication as our best overall pick, the Transcend Stash Tight; the only difference is that these don’t have side pockets—only one hidden, internal key (or card) pocket.

We love the soft, barely-there feel and squat-proof coverage for comfortable and worry-free wear. And we found that the high-rise waistband offers the perfect balance of stretch and light compression for low-impact workouts, lounging, and all-day wear. We also appreciate that these ultra-lightweight and breathable leggings are rated UPF 50+ for added protection in the sun.

Potential Flaws

  • We do not recommend these for high-impact exercise because they don’t offer enough compression and support to stay in place during intense movements.
  • This pair doesn’t have any pockets that are large enough to fit your phone. If you like this style and fabrication but want pockets, check out our best overall pick, the Transcend Stash Tight.

Pros
  • Good compression

  • Functional and stylish

  • Wash well

Cons
  • No large pockets

  • Can be hot

Key Specs:

Sizes: XXS to 3XL (00 to 24) Materials: Nylon, Lycra Inseam: 25, 27, 30 inches Pockets: Back drop-in pocket Care: Machine wash and dry Our Overall Rating: 4.6/5

Who They’re For

Best if you want a functional and flattering legging for lounging and working out.

Why We Love Them

Athleta’s Elation Flare Pants provide the perfect balance of comfort and support for lounging, low- to medium-impact workouts, and all-day wear. They’re made with the same fabrication of nylon and Lycra as the Salutation Stash Tight, delivering a super-soft feel and gentle compression. Plus, with the flared leg, you get some extra style and flatter

During testing, we found that the three-layer, high-rise waistband stays in place and delivers enough compression for everything from holding a Pilates pose to jogging on the treadmill. And the opaque, silky UPF 50+ material held up well throughout the entire testing period—with no signs of wear and tear.

Potential Flaws

  • There aren’t any large pockets for storing your phone or other items, only one small back drop-in pocket.
  • These run a little warm during hot and sweaty workouts, and are not as sweat-wicking as other options.

Pros
  • Versatile design

  • No sheering at the knee

  • No side seams

Cons
  • Can be hot

  • May shrink when washed

Key Specs:

Sizes: XXS to 3XL (00 to 24) Materials: Nylon, Lycra Inseam: 25, 27, 30 inches Pockets: Back drop-in pocket Care: Machine wash and dry Our Overall Rating: 4.2/5

Who They’re For

Best for comfort and stretch during low-impact workouts, lounging, and all-day wear.

Why We Love Them

Athleta’s Elation Leggings are remarkably versatile—we wore them with our favorite sports bra to a yoga class and dressed up in heels for dinner. Just like the Salutation Stash Tight and the Elation Flared Pant, these are made with a blend of nylon and Lycra—meaning that they’re super soft and offer gentle compression

During testing, we were happy to find that these passed the squat test, remaining completely opaque when we squatted and lunged in front of a mirror—so they're ideal for studio workouts like bungee fitness. This opacity remained consistent throughout the entire testing period. We love that there are no side seams for a comfy fit, as well as enough stretch for the leggings to move with you.

Potential Flaws

  • We did notice that these tend to run warm, so we do not recommend them for heated classes or warm weather workouts.
  • These leggings are not as breathable as other options, meaning they're not the best for high-impact workouts, like cardio or high-intensity interval training (HIIT).

Bonus Favorites

We didn't test these Athleta leggings ourselves, but we do think they're solid options. They have fabrications, features, and prices that are similar to the brand's leggings that we did wear-test:

Pros
  • Warm, brushed lining

  • Three pockets

  • Reflective details

Cons
  • May run small

Key Specs:

Sizes: XXS to 3XL (00 to 24) Materials: Recycled nylon, Lycra Inseam Length: 25, 27, 30 inches Pockets: Zippered side pockets, hidden waistband pocket Care: Machine wash and dry

Who They’re For

Best if you work out outside in cool or cold weather—also great for under ski pants.

Why We Love Them

For activities like cold-weather running or walking, we recommend Athleta’s Rainier Tight for its warmth, compression, and added safety features. They’re made from the same fabrication as the Ultimate Stash Tight—recycled nylon blended with Lycra—plus a soft, brushed lining that keeps cold air out

We didn’t wear-test this specific pair, but Sarah Pflugradt, MS, RDN, CSCS, a physical education teacher and one of our experts interviewed for this piece, always chooses the Rainier Tight for runs in cold weather or as everyday pants in the winter. In addition to zippered pockets to keep your valuables safe, these leggings have reflective details, so you’ll stay visible to motorists and other pedestrians in low-light conditions.

Potential Flaws

  • These leggings tend to run small, so if you’re in-between sizes, we recommend purchasing one size up.
  • The protective fabric is amazing for cold-weather wear, but too hot in mild and warm weather.

Pros
  • Rated UPF 50+

  • Fabric won’t pill over time

  • Durable and protective

Cons
  • Not for casual wear

Key Specs:

Sizes: XS to 3XL (0 to 26) Materials: Recycled nylon, spandex Inseam: 26, 28, 31 inches Pockets: Six zippered pockets Care: Machine wash and dry

Who They’re For

Best for hikers, climbers, and outdoor adventurers.

Why We Love Them

A great pair of hiking pants will provide comfort and protection to keep you focused and safe on the trail. Designed for hiking, climbing, and outdoor adventures, Athleta’s Headlands Hybrid Cargo II Tight features a durable fabric that resists tears and keeps you warm. Plus, it boasts six zippered pockets for optimal storage solutions—whether it’s your phone or a mid-hike energy snack.

While we didn’t personally test this pair, we do love its more sustainable fabrication of recycled nylon and spandex that works to wick away sweat and stretches to let you move freely. We also appreciate that the leggings are water-repellent and rated UPF 50+, so you can hike confidently in all weather conditions.

Potential Flaws

  • These leggings repel water, but they are not completely waterproof.
  • They are designed for hiking and outdoor activities, so we do not recommend them for indoor workouts or casual wear.
What to look for in leggings
Five key features to look for in leggings.

Verywell Fit

What to Look for When Shopping For Athleta Leggings

  • Price: Most Athleta leggings cost between $80 and $110, which is in line with other top-quality athleisure brands. Leggings that have more design features—like pockets or UPF ratings—tend to cost more. Known for their durability, functionality, and comfort, Athleta leggings can be worn for a wide variety of activities, making them worth the investment. They also tend to go on sale regularly, so keep an eye out for site-wide or end-of-season deals on your favorite styles.
  • Fabric: Athleta leggings come in six main designs that are made from a blend of multiple materials, including nylon, spandex, polyester, Lycra, and elastane. Some pairs are also made with recycled materials that originate from plastic bottles. Others are rated UPF 50+, meaning they block 98% of the sun’s UV radiation. When shopping for leggings, particularly workout leggings, we recommend looking for fabrics that are breathable and sweat-wicking to keep you cool. Odor resistance and quick-drying properties are also helpful, especially if you like to exercise outdoors.
  • Fit: When you first try on a pair of leggings, they should have a snug fit, without any pinching or bunching. Look for a pair that allows you to move freely but stays in place. Most of the Athleta leggings that we tested run true to size, but we always recommend trying on leggings to get the perfect fit.
  • Length: Athleta leggings come in a variety of inseam lengths, including cropped, 7/8, and full length. Finding the right length depends on your measurements, personal preference, and when you’ll be wearing your leggings. If you’re going to be running outdoors in cold weather, you’ll want a full-length tight to keep you warm. For indoor classes, you may prefer a cropped silhouette.
  • Pockets: Pockets are great for stashing essential items—like your phone, keys, wallet, or credit card—while you’re on the go. Many of the Athleta leggings we recommend on our list feature pockets, if storing items is important to you.

How We Tested the Athleta Leggings

To develop our list of the best Athleta leggings, we've tested seven of the brand’s different styles so far. When testing, we evaluate each legging based on the following key attributes:

  • Quality: When we first try on the leggings, we take note of how the fabric feels against our skin: Soft, lightweight, scratchy, thick? We then get moving to see if the leggings move comfortably with our bodies or if our movements feel restricted. Leggings receive high marks in this category if they have the right balance of stretch and compression.
  • Opacity: We perform several squat tests in front of a mirror to determine whether they are opaque enough to be considered squat-proof leggings. We only select leggings that do not expose extra skin or become sheer when the fabric is stretched.
  • Fit: In order to assess for fit, we note whether or not we are able to comfortably wear our regular legging size. If not, we determine that the leggings may run small or large and recommend that you size accordingly. We prioritize pairs that fit a range of sizes and heights.
  • Performance: During our wear tests, we pay special attention to the hold of the leggings: Do they stay in place or require a lot of adjusting? Is there any sagging, bunching, or rolling? Leggings score high for performance if they are comfortable and supportive enough for a wide variety of activities.
  • Value: After putting each pair of leggings through our rigorous testing process, we look at its price. We usually prioritize leggings that are priced lower than we expect or that we believe are worth more than the listed price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Athleta compare to lululemon?

Athleta leggings and lululemon leggings are made from similar, high-quality materials. Both brands make soft, durable leggings that are ideal for walking, hiking, yoga, Pilates, weightlifting, and more. But Athleta leggings tend to be slightly less expensive and come in more sizes and lengths.

Should I size up or down with Athleta leggings?

Athleta leggings mostly run true to size. However, some of their leggings may run large, so we recommend sizing down if you’re in-between sizes. If you bought the wrong size, Athleta offers free returns and exchanges for online orders, with a 60-day return window.

Are Athleta leggings good for running?

Yes! In fact, they're great for running. Athleta's Ultimate Legging is our top pick for hitting the pavement, trail, or treadmill because it offers the right amount of compression and support to stay up and in place during all types of runs. We also like the Rainier Tight, which has a soft, brushed lining for running in cold weather.

Do Athleta leggings contain BPA?

In May 2023, the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) announced that, after testing, it had found high levels of BPA in certain activewear pieces containing blends of polyester and spandex, including leggings from Athleta. We stand by our recommendations on this list, as these products have not been recalled and the science on transdermal absorption of BPA is still not settled. As a precaution, it is best to limit the amount of time you spend in activewear by changing out of it when you are finished working out.
